FAQ
What is stock sentiment analysis?
Stock sentiment analysis is the assessment of share price movements based on sentiment
expressed in publicly available documents such as articles, blogs and press releases. This
analysis enables the user to assess the influence of sentiment on historic price fluctuations,
detect a build-up of either negative or positive sentiment, and anticipate future price trends.
How can The Stock Sonar assist me in making better trading decisions?
The Stock Sonar analyzes relevant information and events with unprecedented accuracy and
speed, enabling you to reach informed trading decisions. An example of The Stock Sonar’s
unique capabilities can be seen in its analysis of the share price of Toyota Motor Corporation
prior to, during and following extensive recalls during the latter part of 2009 and the beginning
of 2010. The system quantified the negative sentiment relating to Toyota prior to the massive
drop in share price. An additional example can be seen in The Stock Sonar’s timely analysis
of the Autodesk Inc. share price. During the period leading up to Feb 10th 2010, there were
repeated incidents of positive sentiment, providing an excellent basis for an informed decision.
On February 24th, Autodesk posted results far in excess of the analysts’ expectations, leading
to a 10% share price increase in a single day. The Stock Sonar detected the buildup in positive
sentiment prior to a significant jump in share price.
What is The Stock Sonar's underlying technology?
The Stock Sonar is based on a platform which attains near-human intelligence by using cutting-
edge text mining and semantic matching technologies. Utilizing this breakthrough technology,
The Stock Sonar retrieves, reads and analyzes information based on an in-depth understanding
of a text’s meaning. The platform’s advanced capabilities enable it to discern positive and
negative nuances, thereby providing an unprecedented level of analysis and assessment.
What kind of information does The Stock Sonar analyze?
The Stock Sonar screens and analyzes vast amounts of publicly available information including
news articles, editorials, blogs, tweets, and press releases.
What kind of corporate events does The Stock Sonar analyze?

financial and legal events, acquisitions, partnerships, analyst recommendations and product
announcements. These events can be sorted by date and type.
What are "positive impact" and "negative impact"?
Positive or negative impact measures the intensity of the sentiment expressed on any particular
day. Positive and negative impact on the share price and/or index are illustrated on the charting
tool, allowing the user to instantly assess the effect of the day’s news and events on the share
price.
What is a "document score" and how is it calculated?
A document score reflects a normalization of positive and negative comments that appear in any
given document. The score ranges from -1 (extremely negative) to +1 (extremely positive); a
score of zero means neutral.
What are the "daily score" and the "composite score"?
The Stock Sonar calculates a daily score and a composite score for each stock, index and
sector. The daily score represents a normalization of the positive and negative impact of that
day’s articles. The composite score attributes a greater weighting to recent news and events in
comparison to more dated information.
Can I build a customized stock portfolio?
As a registered user you can build a customized stock portfolio in the tab labeled “Portfolio”.
The portfolio can be sorted by company, current score, a thirty-day composite score or changes
in the composite score. You can also choose to view components of your portfolio with either a
negative or positive score.
Is there a limitation on the number of stocks in my portfolio?
A registered user can track up to ten stocks.
