Introduction

Accurate information plays a critical role in successful stock selection. Used effectively, pertinent information enables you to assess the performance of share prices and identify market trends which are likely to affect your stock portfolio. The constant stream of documents, article, blogs, tweets and announcements flooding the Internet contains valuable facts, insights and opinions which can provide you with the ability to make educated decisions.

The Stock Sonar incorporates a unique technology which performs incisive analysis and assessment of vast amounts of information instantaneously. Not only does the system provide you with access to relevant articles, blogs, press releases and other publicly available information, but it also presents you with a sophisticated tool to analyze the retrieved information and reach informed trading decisions. Moreover, The Stock Sonar provides the tools to drill-down in the underlying raw data at any point in your analysis.

User Enrollment and Privileges

Two types of user accounts are offered to The Stock Sonar users with each level allowing different privileges. An evaluation account is provided to the Guest User and full access to all of The Stock Sonar’s powerful capabilities is provided to the Registered User.

Registered User

As a Registered User, you have unrestricted use of all of the unique features which the system has to offer, including the Analyzer, Impact Feed, and Portfolio. You also have access to full charting options, and you can create a portfolio of up to ten companies.

Guest User

As a Guest User you can gain hands-on experience with the application by having access to many of its powerful features. However, Sentiment Analysis using the Analyzer is limited to three stocks. The creation of a customized portfolio is available only to Registered users. Take the opportunity to view a free demo of the product in order to fully understand the unique features it has to offer.

Impact Feed

This section displays the day’s most positive and negative articles, news releases and blog posts, and provides various options to sort and display the selected data.

Score

The Stock Sonar detects negative and positive sentiment in each document relevant to a specific company. The system weighs the significance of each positive and negative mention and calculates a score between –1 and +1 for every document. Documents with a positive sentiment are marked in green and documents with a negative sentiment are marked in red.

Sort articles by score

By choosing the appropriate button at the top of the table you can choose to view the day’s most positive articles, the day’s most negative articles or a combination of the two. In addition, articles can be sorted by either ascending or descending score.

Display articles by portfolio, index or sector

By selecting the relevant option on the left side of the screen, you can view articles relevant to your stock portfolio, or to a particular index or sector.

Display articles with title only or full text

You can suppress or display the document's contents by clicking the Article Preview heading on the right side of the screen. The full contents of the original article can be viewed in a new window by clicking the Original Article link.

Highlight relevant sections of the article

To automatically highlight sections containing positive and negative comments, click the pencil icon above the article text. Relevant text is now highlighted with positive sentiment appearing in green and negative sentiment appearing in red.

Stock Search

To commence your Stock Sentiment Analysis, enter a company name or ticker symbol into the search box on the top left corner of the page. The Stock Sonar will list all matching entries as you enter letters into the search box. The resulting analysis will be displayed in the Analyzer.

The Analyzer

Public sentiment has a decisive impact on share prices. In order to be able to make informed and timely investment decisions, it is vital to stay abreast of sentiment as reflected in publicly available articles, blogs and press releases. The Analyzer provides you with a broad range of tools to assess the impact of positive and negative sentiment on share price. It is comprised of three components described below – the Sentiment Graph, Articles and Events.

The Sentiment Graph

The Sentiment Graph is a powerful tool used to assess the effect that sentiment has on share price movements and detect the buildup of negative and positive sentiment. The fully customizable Stock Sentiment Analysis tool also serves as an excellent platform to discover new investment and trading opportunities.

Score and Impact

Based on the sentiment contained within each document and event, The Stock Sonar determines the positive and negative score of the analyzed documents and articles. You can assess the effect of the day’s news and events on the share price by tracing the positive impact (green line) and negative impact (red line). Positive impact reflects the amount and significance of positive comments on any given day. Negative impact represents the severity as well as the amount of negative comments. Corporate press releases issued by the company are not included in the calculation of negative or positive impact. You can choose to view only Impact or Price by checking the relevant boxes on either side of the graph’s timeline.

Daily Score and Composite Score

Based on each document score and impact, The Stock Sonar calculates a daily score and a composite score. The daily score constitutes a normalization of the positive and negative impact, while the composite score attributes a greater weight to more recent news and events.

Customizing the Sentiment Graph

This unique charting tool allows you to view the price movements of a particular share along with sentiment trends. The graph provides several different representations of sentiment including positive impact, negative impact, daily score and composite score.

Display Impact vs. Price

To view the impact of positive and negative sentiment on share price, select Impact from the drop down box on the left side of the graph. By selecting this option, the graph will display negative impact (red line), positive impact (green line), and the share price over the selected time span.

Display Impact vs. Price Change

To view the impact of positive and negative sentiment on the fluctuation in share prices, select the Price Change option from the drop down box on the right side of the graph. By selecting this option, the graph will display positive sentiment (green line), negative sentiment (red line), and share price changes over the selected time span.

Display Score vs. Price

Another option to assess the effect of sentiment on share price can be viewed by selecting Score from the drop down box on the left side of the graph. In this option, the graph displays the daily score and composite score together with the share price. The daily score constitutes a normalization of the positive and negative impact, while the composite score attributes a greater weight to more recent news and events. By selecting this option the charting tool allows you display the correlation between the daily score, composite score, and share price over the selected time span.

Display Score vs. Price Change

To view the effect of sentiment on changes in the share price, select the Price Change option on the right side of the graph. This option displays daily score and composite score, together with changes in the share price. The daily score constitutes a normalization of the positive and negative impact, while the composite score attributes a greater weight to more recent news and events. By selecting this option, the charting tool allows you to display the correlation between the daily score, composite score, and share price fluctuations over the selected time span.

Coming Soon - Comparables

The Stock Sonar will enable you to expand the scope of your Stock Sentiment Analysis by allowing you to perform a range of comparisons between specific stocks, sectors and indices. Click the Compare button at the bottom of the graph to analyze comparable composite and daily scores, share prices of related companies, and correlation between various sectors, indices or stocks.

Dates

The time span can be customized by using the menu at the top of the graph. You can display sentiment data and share prices according to the following options:

  • W – one week display
  • M – one month display
  • 3M – three month display
  • 6M – six month display
  • Y – one year display

You can also set the desired time span according to dates in the From-To section.

Articles

The Articles tab in the Analyzer allows you to view all articles related to a specific stock. This feature allows you to extend your analysis by highlighting the relevant portions of the text, filtering articles by type and impact and – where available – granting you access to the original article.

Score

Filter articles by impact

The left menu allows you to sort articles according to their impact. The default setting is to display articles with positive and negative impact, but not those with neutral impact. These settings can be adjusted by sliding the indicators on either side of the impact range bar and selecting to display articles with neutral impact.

Events

The Stock Sonar enables you to assess the impact of corporate events on stock prices. By clicking the Events tab, you can view corporate events extracted from news articles along with the associated sentiment. You can also sort events by type.

Event Impact

The Stock Sonar detects negative and positive sentiment in each corporate event. The system weighs the significance of each positive and negative mention and calculates a positive or negative impact for every event. Events with a positive impact are marked with a green (+) sign and events with a negative impact are marked with a red (–) sign.

Filter events by type, date and impact

You can analyze the impact on stock price resulting from the following types of corporate events: acquisitions, analyst recommendations, financial and legal events, partnerships and product announcements, in addition you can sort events by date.

View the text associated with an event

By clicking the event summary, The Stock Sonar will display the relevant text in the body of the article. Negative sentiment is displayed in red and positive sentiment is displayed in green. You can suppress or display the text associated with each event by clicking Article Preview. Where available, you can view the original document associated with the event by clicking the Original Article link situated under the Article Preview button.

Portfolio

You can build a customized portfolio of stocks with quick and easy access to relevant counters. You can display your portfolio by company, the day’s score, today’s change and change in percentages. You can also view portfolio components with negative or positive scores by clicking the relevant buttons at the top of the table.
